The history of the San Paolo Stadium

The stadium, with the name of Stage of the Sun, opened on in 1959 with a championship match between Napoli and Juventus, ended with 2-1 result for the Azzurri victory, but there was a second official inauguration on Jan. 6, 1960 with the International Cup among Italy and Switzerland. The San Paolo is the third largest soccer stadium in Italy after the Meazza in Milan and the Olimpico in Rome.

The first restructuring took place in the occasion of the European Championships in 1980, and later with the Worlds Italy 90‘. Over the years, various works of modernization of the structure have been made and are still being examined projects for a big makeover.

The structure, which is therefore one of the main sports centers of the city, currently provides multifunctional gyms, halls for martial arts, basketball court and running track. The San Paolo also hosts many events, including unforgettable concerts of famous Italian and international singers.

The S.S.C. Napoli and its birth

The stadium regularly hosts matches of S.S.C. Napoli, born in 1905 as the Naples Soccer Club and founded by Ernesto Bruschini. During the years the team has changed a lot: it lived a golden age between the 80‘ and 90’ with the President Ferlaino and the arrival of who is still considered one of the best soccer players in the world Diego Armando Maradona.

The gold triad called Ma.Gi.Ca. composed of Maradona, Bruno Giordano and Antonio Careca, was able to bring to Naples the Scudetto, the Italian Cup, and to give to fans an unheard-of football show. During the golden years, many parents decided to name their children Diego, in honor of the player who is still a legend among the Neapolitan.
